Helping students take an advanced step towards getting a job in the health field is just around the corner at OSCVI in Owen Sound.

The highschool has just secured funding for Specialist High Skills Major Program in the Health and Wellness Sector.

Principal Glenn Boisvert says the faculty had looked at several different High Skills programs and decided the health and wellness sector was one of the best routes for OSCVI.

Boisvert says they chose the health and wellness as their location close to the hospital and the fact the population is aging and in need of more health care workers.

Boisvert says they hope to have upwards of 50 students signed up by September for the course - already over 30 are interested.

The high school has partnered with the Grey Bruce Health Services, Public Health, Georgian College and other health professionals in the area.

Boisvert says the students get a diploma with the specialization to help them further their education in any aspect of the health care field.

He adds there are regular classes involved in the skills such as english and math with just a segment on health care, many times featuring guest speakers from the health community in Grey Bruce.

The courses will begin in full swing this September.
